Lalibela and the Roha Hotel

Lalibela is a small town on the side of a mountain. The airport is about 20 km. below, down in a flatter part of the region. This picture shows the countryside we crossed as we headed up the side of the mountain in the distance.
Originally, the name was Roha, hence the name of the hotel we stayed in. It was the capital of the Zagwe dynasty which was in power in Ethiopia from about 1000 CE, for some 300 or more years. One of the more famous kings was Lalibela and so the town became known as Lalibela.
This picture was taken just out the front door of our room in the Roha Hotel.
