Axum was an ancient kingdom, dating back perhaps as much as 500,000 years. Beginning probably around the first century BCE, and for several centuries, it was a great regional power. The sign shown in the photo here gives some information about the early times. The problem is that very little archeological work has yet been done, so much remains unknown or uncertain.
