Do you remember back in 1974 the excitement when the remains of "Lucy" were found in Ethiopia? Lucy represents one of the first hominids and she was found in the Hadar region in the Rift Valley of Ethiopia, and lived some 4 to 2.7 million years ago. Remnants of some 300 individuals have since been found in that area. They are designated as Australopithecus afarensis. We went to the national museum in Addis Ababa where they have models of Austalopithecus and some of the remains that have been found. You can find more information at

How exciting it is to realize that all of us, we in the US, people in Europe, people in the northlands, all the Ethiopians and other Africans.... all of us have an ancestor back in those ancient times. We are all brothers and sisters! Isn't this a fantastic and strange world that we live in!
The first picture below shows Lucy's remains. The second and third pictures tell something of Lucy and Austalopithecus afarensis. Click on them to get them big enough to read.
